The Portobello Connoisseur is a working title for a game which is under development. The game will…

  • Allow anyone to host, and take part in an affordable wine tasting evening from the comfort of their own home with friends and family
  • Let you have fun competing in groups with a quiz based format and blind tastings that make for a great and memorable evening
  • Introduce you to new, quality wines from across the globe, selected by experts from the best merchants
  • Allow you to learn about the wine making process, grapes, regions and wine related popular culture without having to work too hard
  • Help you discover new favourites wines without costing a fortune
  • Equip you with the knowledge to dive further into the world of wines

Does This Sound Familiar?

You are staring down an infinitely long supermarket aisle with wine from every corner of the world, hoping you’ll find the one you always go for because the “wrong bottle” could ruin a good evening.

You are sat in your friends house wandering when they’ll open the bottle you brought because your not sure about everything else.

On an evening out you have a quick glance at the wine menu then pass it across the table and generously say “you choose” because you don’t know where to start.

You are secretly pleased when you walk into a bar and ask what wines they have and they reply “Both”.

Me Too ! That’s why this project exists.

How it works

The game includes a board with a wine related map of the world, quiz cards, notepads for recording your tasting notes, counters and full instructions.

For each game, you order a wine pack from one of the carefully selected merchants, which includes six undisclosed half-bottles of quality wine from different regions of the world, along with a multiple choice list of grape varieties, attributes and flavours relating to those wines. It also includes a sealed envelope with the experts notes for scoring the game.

You invite friends and neighbours to join you for the game, so that you have up to four teams of 2 to 4 players (6 to 12 people is ideal, but you can have more).

You play the game ! Each team competes to be first answer quiz questions correctly, taste all wines from all the regions and try and identify the key attributes of each one. Points are tallied up at the end based on who came first and which team more accurately identified each wine.
